  * CALL TO WORSHIP - Psalm 77:16-20, adapted                             Sally Noonan
One: I will call to mind the deeds of the Lord; I will remember your wonders of old.
Many: I will meditate on all your work, and muse on your mighty deeds.

One: Your way, O God, is holy.  What god is so great as our God?
Many: You are the God who works wonders; you have displayed your might  among the peoples.

One: When the waters saw you, O God, when the waters saw you, they were
afraid; the very deep trembled.
Many: The clouds poured out water; the skies thundered; your arrows flashedon every side.  Your way was through the sea, your path through the mighty waters.

One: You led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.
Many: We shall call to mind these deeds of our God; we will remember God’s  wonders of old.

* INVOCATION (in unison) – Let us praise the name of the Living God; together let us glorify the God of Israel!  You are full of wonders, your marvelous deeds we call to mind, as we meditate upon your works.  To your people you give all that is needed, as you lead your flock through the waters and across the desert.  We are humbled by your steadfastness and now in this new season, we prepare to pledge to you in return the first fruits of our labors for the sake of your church.  May we give as richly as we have received, O God, open our hearts anew, in and through Jesus Christ.  Amen.

POSTLUDE  -  “Improvisation on ‘I Am Thine, O Lord’ ”

The Scripture Hymn of the Month is, in many ways, a typical 19th century gospel song:  a rousing chorus to inspire congregations to heed the call of salvation in Christ Jesus.  Written in 1868 for a Sunday School mission anniversary, it has widespread use in many worship experiences. This enthusiastic evangelistic gospel hymn seems particularly fitting during this month of World Communion Sunday and  World Mission giving.                              -Richard Matteson, Minister of Music-
